Google Business Profile checklist for roofing contractors

Most roofing profiles are half-built: one category, five-year-old photos, reviews that stopped coming in 2023. Here is what an actual Google Business Profile worth ranking looks like.

In this piece

Most roofing companies set up a Google Business Profile once, at the start, and never touch it again. That is the single biggest reason a well-reviewed roofer with a decade in business still loses the Maps pack to a competitor with half the history. Here is what an actual, maintained profile has that a set-and-forget one does not.

Category and service list

Your primary category should be the specific one you actually do most, "Roofing contractor" rather than a generic "Contractor," with secondary categories added for every real service you offer, gutters, siding, storm restoration. Under-categorised profiles get outranked by competitors who simply filled the field in correctly. This takes ten minutes and most roofers have never done it.

Service area, set honestly

List the cities you actually serve, not every city you would technically drive to. Google Maps ranking is proximity-driven near your verified location, and an inflated service area does not extend your map pin's reach, it just signals to Google that the listing may not be trustworthy. If you want to rank in a city outside your Maps radius, organic search is the right channel for that, not a stretched Google Business Profile.

Photos, added on a real schedule

A profile with twelve photos from the year it was created looks abandoned next to a competitor adding new job photos every week. Real, dated project photos, ideally geotagged where the job actually was, do double duty: they give a homeowner proof before they click through, and they give Google a fresh-activity signal a static profile cannot produce.

Review velocity, not just review count

A hundred reviews from 2022 rank behind thirty from this quarter. What matters is a steady rate of new, specific reviews arriving over time, not a lifetime total. Build a system that asks every satisfied customer at the same point in the job, right after final walkthrough, rather than remembering occasionally when business is slow.

Q&A and posts, actually maintained

The Questions and Answers section is public and editable by anyone, including competitors seeding fake questions. Check it monthly and answer real ones yourself before someone else answers them badly. Posts (offers, updates, project highlights) are a small, easy signal of an active business that most roofing profiles simply leave empty.

What gets a profile suspended

Virtual offices, PO boxes used as a physical address, and keyword-stuffed business names ("Roofing Contractor Roof Repair Installation Company") are the most common triggers, and suspension can take weeks to reverse once it happens. If your profile has any of these, fix them before doing anything else on this list. A suspended profile ranks nowhere, regardless of how good everything else is.
