Google Local Services Ads vs. Google Ads for roofers

Both show up at the top of Google. They are not the same product, and treating them as interchangeable is why so many roofers run one badly instead of both well.

Local Services Ads and standard Google Ads both put a roofing company at the top of a search result, and that surface similarity is exactly why roofers confuse them. The mechanics underneath are completely different, and picking the wrong one for the job wastes budget either way.

Local Services Ads: pay per lead, not per click

LSA sits in the "Google Guaranteed" slot above the regular ads and organic results. You do not pay for a click, you pay when someone actually contacts you through the platform, and Google backs the job with its own guarantee badge, which does real work on trust for a homeowner who has never heard of your company. There is no landing page to build and no keyword list to manage. It is the simplest channel to turn on, and for a roofer who qualifies, it is usually the cheapest booked job in the account.

Standard Google Ads: control, at the cost of complexity

Regular search ads give you control LSA does not: you choose the exact keywords, write the ad copy, build the landing page, and decide the bid for each service and each city. That control is also the cost. A campaign built without negative keyword discipline burns budget on clicks that were never going to convert, and a slow or generic landing page loses the homeowner before the phone rings. Done well, standard ads reach searches LSA cannot touch, commercial roofing, specific storm-damage terms, or a service area LSA does not cover well.

Why most roofers need both, not one

LSA and standard ads are not competing for the same budget line, they are covering different parts of the search page and different parts of the buying decision. Running LSA alone leaves money on the table for the searches it cannot reach. Running standard ads alone means giving up the Google Guaranteed slot to whichever competitor bothered to qualify for it. The roofers we see get the most out of paid search run both, with standard ads is picking up the volume and terms LSA cannot serve.

What this means for budget

We tell roofers directly: a serious standard-ads campaign in a competitive metro generally needs at least $3,000 to $5,000 a month in ad spend just to gather enough data to optimise. LSA has a different budget shape entirely, since you are paying per lead rather than funding a learning phase, which is part of why it is often the right place to start before adding standard ads on top once the account has room in the budget for both.
