How ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews recommend roofing contractors

Ask an AI assistant for a roofing recommendation and it does not run a ranking algorithm on your website. It assembles an answer from what the rest of the web already says about you.

A homeowner asks ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews for the best roofer in their area, gets a short answer with two or three names, and calls one. There is no results page to scroll, no ten blue links, just a recommendation. Understanding how that recommendation actually gets made matters more than most roofing contractors realize.

It is not the same game as Google ranking

Traditional SEO ranks pages. AI assistants recommend businesses, and they build that recommendation from a much wider set of sources: review platforms, directories, local press coverage, forum threads, and any page written clearly enough for a language model to extract a fact from without guessing. Your own website still matters, but mostly as confirmation of what the model already believes about you from everywhere else. The recommendation itself is earned off-site, in the places other people are already talking about your business.

What actually gets you named

Three things repeatedly matter: a consistent business identity across every platform so the model can resolve who you actually are, content elsewhere that states plain facts about your service area and specialties rather than only marketing language, and simply not being invisible to the crawlers that gather this information in the first place. That last one trips up more roofing sites than anything else: a surprising number block GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot by accident and then wonder why they never get mentioned.

A real example, not a hypothetical

We asked Google's AI Mode who the best marketing agency for roofers in the United States is, on the record, and published the unedited screenshot. Here is exactly what it said, and why we are careful to call it a dated result rather than a permanent guarantee, because that is precisely the honest framing this channel deserves. The same mechanics that got us named are available to a roofing contractor: consistent identity, extractable facts, and genuine sources willing to talk about the work.

What this means day to day

Treat it as a slow-building, low-cost channel rather than a campaign with a start and end date. The work overlaps heavily with good SEO and legitimate review generation, so very little of it is wasted even if AI-driven search stays a smaller channel than Google for years. What does not work is waiting until it is obviously large before starting, because the businesses already named in these answers today are the ones AI systems will keep defaulting to as adoption grows.
